The Whins in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire is where Maud Grieve and her husband lived from about 1908 and is where she established her Medicinal Plant Nursery and Training School during the First World War. Claire has drawn on a rich variety of sources to examine Maud’s work in depth which has enabled her to record this woman’s remarkable achievements. The book sets Maud within the wider context of herbalists, pioneering women gardeners and the social events that occurred at the time
Maud was well known in the village in her lifetime; unfortunately today few residents of Chalfont St Peter know of her, however she is more generally remembered for her book A Modern Herbal. Claire’s book includes a wide range of images from the period and the author’s photographs of the area today. All trace of The Whins herb farm and garden has disappeared under twentieth century housing development.
