The Trust was saddened to hear of the death of Lord Rothschild aged 87, whose financial acumen, philanthropic sensibility, unstinting support for culture and the arts made him an eminent figure in British life.

He was Chairman of Trustees of the National Gallery from 1985 and 1991 and then chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and after this of the Heritage Lottery Fund. In Buckinghamshire he created an important role at Waddesdon Manor with his Rothschild Foundation, the family charitable trust in which he has been involved as a major benefactor in the restoration, upkeep and renewal of Waddesdon Manor which he inherited from his aunt Dorothy in 1988. Initiatives such as the new building at Windmill Hill which is shared by the Manor’s Archive, the Foundation’s offices and many artworks bear Lord Rothschild’s stamp in promoting the highest standards in modern art and architecture. He found himself on television in 2015 after Flint House, situated on the Estate just below Windmill Hill, won the RIBA Award.

The Trust understands that his eldest daughter, Hannah, will now chair the Foundation.
