Classical motifs and garden poetry in 18th century Oxfordshire Gardens
Dr Alley Marie Jordan traces the lineage of the garden grotto and its connections to wider classical motifs in poetry and myth. Drawing on her PhD in classics, she speaks on the evocation of shells, fountains, grottoes and Venus at Blenheim, Rousham and elsewhere that allowed the visitor to participate in the myth and theatre of classical thought. Despite the title, Blenheim and Rousham are of course extremely well known to our community of landscape and garden enthusiasts.
