Picture a country lane west of Dunkirk, extensive marshalling yards to the west and soggy arable land and the retail park of Grand Synthe to the East. Through a car window, I spotted a parterre. The website of the nearby Ferme des Jésuites, an organic market garden specialising in leeks and micro salad, says they have the maintenance of a ‘botanical’ garden. Google Earth confirms that the central basin is empty and the company has not responded to my email asking where to find out more.
