Karen is a chartered landscape architect – landscape historian and horticulturist and writer. With over 30 years of experience in the design, development & management of public & private outdoor spaces in urban and rural settings. With degrees in horticulture, landscape architecture and garden history her practice fuses the three disciplines. She has incorporated these into her academic research at the University of Westminster, where she is currently conducting doctoral research into the contribution of Preben Jakobsen to the development of UK post-war landscape architecture.
She is also a knowledgeable plants-person and a trained professional gardener.
Karen has a specialist interest in the conservation of post-war designed landscapes and is also interested in the history of the profession of landscape architecture, particularly the contribution that women have made, and continue to make, to the profession and champion and explore female practitioners through her Women in Landscape Design social media streams: @LandscapeWomen (Twitter) @women_in_landscape_design (Instagram).
In 2016 she developed a project for the Gardens Trust about post-war designed landscapes which ultimately led to a large batch of such sites being ‘listed’ in August 2020, including Broadwater Park in Buckinghamshire the subject of her talk (on line).
“Broadwater Park is a commercial landscape designed in 1982-1984 by Preben Jakobsen. It was developed to accompany a new office building by Elsom Pack Roberts (EPR) for the National Water Council on land formerly part of the Denham Film Studios. Jakobsen was an award winning, influential modernist Danish landscape architect and theoretician whose practice was based in the UK. His design exploited the site spoil and prospect to construct an extensive lawn enclosed by a circular clipped Field Maple hedge, sculptural flower gardens and car-parks, surrounded by woodland, the total composition overlooking the River Colne. Following the Garden Trust’s crowd-sourced Compiling the Record campaign, in 2022 it was Grade II listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens.”
