Starting in 2018, the aim of the ‘Artists and their Gardens’ project was first to identify artists who had lived in the county and then, by researching them, establish: were they gardeners, did they create a garden, did they take inspiration from their garden and has their garden survived? We already knew that there were some well-known residents, who included Paul and John Nash, Eric Gill and John Piper, but how many others were there? It soon became clear that were many more, and we compiled a list of over thirty, primarily from the 20th century.
The research was supported by the art archive held at the County Museum reserve store in Halton, where we found work by several of the artists. We also established links with some of their descendants who were able to provide fascinating insights into their lives. By 2020 we had enough material to upload to our new website and to date there are reports on fifteen artists with a few more to be added shortly, as research is still ongoing.
The talk will focus on a particular group of artists following a road trip I embarked on in the Autumn of 2020 with Clare Butler, in search of the gardens. We started in South Heath, then on to Chesham Bois, Amersham, Gerrards Cross, Iver and finally Weston Turville. It will include photographs taken that day and images from the collection of the County Museum.
