Our visit starts with refreshments and an introductory talk in the magnificent Morning Room of Hartwell House, which stands within 90 acres of glorious landscaped gardens and parkland.
The gardens were originally designed at the start of the 18th century, probably by James Gibbs in a formal manner. There followed a mid 18th century redesign by a follower of Lancelot Brown, Richard Woods.
The spring garden is planted with over 10000 daffodils and the orchard and former kitchen garden contain many old varieties of apple, apricot, peach, pear and plum trees.
Richard Wheeler, specialist in practical Garden History, will lead us on a tour of the grounds, hopefully accompanied by Richard Jones, Property Manager, after the introductory talk.
