Kay McHugh will give an illustrated talk via zoom about her family’s 25-year journey to restore and rebuild their 17th Century house and 3-acre walled garden. The talk will include a brief reference to the historical research about the property, the hard initial stages of rebuilding a home for a young family, creating a productive garden to feed that family, and finally, attempting to restore the garden to its former glory for the public to enjoy.
The walled gardens have been drawn back from the brink of dereliction and been transformed into an inspiring, innovative and sustainably productive garden.
These unique historic gardens lay beneath undergrowth and rubbish, unknown to the local residents of Harefield until they were discovered by Kay and Patrick McHugh in 1995, they have since devoted their lives to restoring the house and garden. The garden has been designed with features that are appropriate to its illustrious Renaissance past while incorporating contemporary ideas of organic growing, sustainability, and recycling. More recently the whole family has been involved in the project.
The 17th-century walled kitchen garden is packed with vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. There are beautiful borders, an orchard with a pond and a historically fascinating arcaded wall. It first open under the NGS scheme in 2018, and today money raised from public open days is enabling work to continue on the restoration.
