Explore the architectural and design elements of what has become known as the landscape garden. Beginning with the classical world of Greece and Rome, we will examine different stylistic approaches to the creation of historical gardens and study buildings and monuments designed for gardens in their context. The formality of Baroque garden design surrounding palaces such as Versailles will be contrasted to the so-called ‘English garden’, where interest lay in creating an illusion of perfected nature.
