Berkshire Garden Trust – talks 16 April and 22 November

Gardening Across the Pond

by
Richard Bisgrove

FRIDAY, 16th APRIL at 2pm

In this talk, Richard will discuss some of the Anglo-American exchanges of horticultural knowledge and plants, from the early settlers in Virginia through to prairie gardens in 21st century England.

Along the way, Richard will talk about the plant dispatches from John Bartram in Philadelphia to Peter Collinson in London; Andrew Jackson Downing’s adaptation of English garden design for an American readership; the Anglophile American colony in Broadway (Worcestershire, not New York!) and the Garden Centre. This lecture is based on Richard’s book published in 2018.

Richard Bisgrove is a retired Course Director in Landscape Management at the University of Reading, and author of several books on garden design and garden history including his most recent publication, Gardening Across the Pond, in 2018. Richard has been a member of BGT since we first started in 2010.

He continues to lecture extensively, including in ‘normal’ years, to the alumni of various American universities at Oxford summer schools, encouraging a better and contemporary understanding of garden history.

Booking: Please book online before the 15th April. The tickets are £5 each.  We will send you a Zoom link for the lecture a few days before the 16th April. The lecture will last approximately 1 hour, followed by questions.  The lecture will be recorded with the link available for a week to those people who have booked for the event.
