From Roman times and for a thousand years, Ninfa (named for a springline temple to the Nymphs) was a thriving town controlling a main road south between mountains and a marshy plain.

By 1297, the Caetani were in the ascendant; the family Pope Boniface VIII gave Ninfa to Pietro Caetani II who rapidly added the mountainside fortress of Sermoneta to the estate. The next century brought plague, malaria and finally the town was sacked by mercenaries and abandoned until reclaimed as a supremely romantic 20th century ‘English’ garden.
